PH 'REELS' SERIES RELEASE NOTES
This is the third and final one from a set of 3 open reels recordings whose source is the same as all the Rimini 1975 shows I seeded last year, though the quality varies a lot and is definitely not on par with those.
There was no info on the reel boxes about when and where these were recorded, but there was a 99,9% probability they all come from shows in Rome (or very nearby).
Unfortunately those originals reels have been lost (destroyed) years ago, so all I can offer comes from 1st generation copies on cassettes I did about 15/20 years ago...
With the invaluable help of a bunch of much more PH/VDGG knowledgeable guys than I will ever be, I'm bringing all three of them out with as much information as I could gather.

REEL 3 NOTES
This was somewhat 'easier' to identify, in being a show with three separate moments: Peter Hammill solo, then joined by David Jackson, and finally by Hugh Banton and Guy Evans. It was part of a double bill happening which took place in Bologna and in Rome in May 1973, with Arthur Brown and Camel sharing the stage with them. Some of the experts I asked to appeared skeptical at the beginning, having heard different stories about the Rome show that convinced them VDGG actually did not play "as such". But then all the pieces of the puzzle came together and we all agreed upon the date and venue.
The story is quite messed up, but apparently there were 2 major problems. First, there was not enough power for both sound and lights: thus the musicians decided to play without any lights in an impromptu jam session which featured members from all of the bands. A testimony of this jam is available on an "official" Italian bootleg under the name of Arthur Brown (though the date on that cd mistakes 1972 for 1973). Revealingly, the source of the cassette master from which the cd was taken is the same taper of these reels…
The second issue was a fire which broke out and caused a long delay before PH/DJ/VDGG could hit the stage. Again, this fits in perfectly with the onstage announcement after "Easy to slip away" that the Stadium neighbors had phoned the police complaining for the noise and the set had to be shortened and quickly brought to a finish.
Hammill was actually touring Italy as a solo artist at the time, but the 2 'package' shows were billed and sold as the only VDGG reunion gigs. Alas, a reunion which only lasted for the 2 final numbers of the evening.

The recording is somehow perplexing: sound wise it is the best of the 3 reels (and I did nothing to it except normalize to have a more consistent sound level between right and left channel and quiet and louder parts). But the reel itself is the one which suffered the most problems, and the enjoyment of the show is marred by plenty of cuts (the main one being between the second verse of Slender Threads and the first one of German Overalls) and loads and loads of dropouts. Some bits were totally unusable and I decided to just cut them out. In others I left them untouched when the music "continuity" was still there. In other instances I have attempted some "daring" edits in the spirit of preserving as much of the recorded music as possible. In total I have edited out about 2 minutes of the "full" digitized tape.
I know that this will probably leave the purists unsatisfied (or even disgusted - some passages have missing lyrics or bridged instrumental sections that were simply non existing… though they appear to run quite smoothly), but to my ears they do sound definitely more pleasant than garbled tape distortion.

REEL 2 NOTES
This was easier to identify than the previous post (Reel 1), as there is a recording circulating already that I was told was posted a few years ago on an Italian blog in the form of mp3s. Rest assured this does not come from that but from an analogue recording, as my cassette copy off the reel was done at a time when mp3s where not even invented yet…

Lineage here is a bit more complicated than usual… Let me explain.
The taper used 2 microphones placed at the front of the stage and an Open Reel machine. As a back up, he was also recording through a small, unknown and unidentified cassette deck attached to the Reel machine 'line out'. He taped both PH/DJ (though they were actually billed as VDGG) and Genesis, but at the end of the night the management decided to get hold of the reels and the taper was only left with the cassette masters. These were promptly copied onto new reels in the following days, and it's from these second set of reels that my own cassette copies come from.
The recording quality is quite good, although it suffers from one major problem: due to the microphones placement, the recording only picked up the monitor speakers and not the PA. This means that while the guitar pieces are very 'present' and nearly perfect (while playing guitar PH was probably center stage), the piano songs are a bit more muffled (its position must have been on one side) and the voice is mostly distant and echoey...

Compared to the circulating mp3s, the bunch of people who helped me sort these reels out told me there are a few differences. First, we don’t get quite as much of What’s It Worth before it stops, and Man-Erg is a wee bit shorter too. Also, the circulating mp3 version features 2 more songs: 'Easy to slip away' and 'Refugees'. Unfortunately I have no idea why these are missing. What you get here is everything I got… On the mp3 I was given, instead, I could not hear the very short intro by whom I suspect is Armando Gallo asking for silence, while PH announces DJ's arrival later in the set.

As for the breakdown and subsequent improvised bit, the explanation I was given is as follows:
"During Peter's gig, a sudden storm started on the venue and during 'What's it worth?', immediately after a lightning, the power supply went off. According to the reviews and memories of the show somebody tracked down, David started playing Man-Erg unplugged (from double sax break onward) with Peter following as well without microphone and piano on the PA. Everyone who was there remembers that moment as the most thrilling one of the whole evening. The gig resumed after with 'What it's worth?', approximately from the same place it was interrupted…" (note: this is my editing of 2 different accounts of the evening I was forwarded)

Sound editing wise, I only added a fade in and a fade out at the beginning and end of the tape, faded out and in the break between 'What it's worth?' and 'Man-Erg', and spliced up a cut that was present in the reel near the end of 'Boat of million years': you can hear the 'jump' but it's better than the bunch of noise/silent seconds in the original. All the rest is untouched. Luckily, compared to the Reel 1, there seems to be nearly zero radio interference.

REEL 1 NOTES
This was the most difficult to track and its location and date have not yet been 100% ascertained. The hint is in the PH/crowd banter where people start shouting for Orme and Hammill replies that shouting or whistling will not bring them out any sooner. This qualifies it for sure as a late 1972 show when PH was indeed touring Italy supporting Le Orme.

Since ALL of the taper's masters I copied come from Rome, I assumed this show as well might come from there. But for one fact: on that tour there were no shows in Rome that I could find mentioned anywhere. So a possibility is this comes from Rome's closest town, which would place it in Terracina, at Teatro Traiano. But let me stress this is just a wild guess.

The recording is quite good, possibly one of the best from the era, though it suffers from quite a few problems. First, the cassette copy was done in a studio with plenty of unwanted radio interference, as is mostly evident in the quietest passages. Furthermore, the original reels had a few flaws: possibly the show was taped over a previous radio recording, as there were a few different "interruptions" where an Italian dj voice which had nothing to do with the Hammil show broke in. This have been edited out: you can here the skips but I decided this solution was better than leaving them in. There are also a few 'phasing' problems here and there which are due to the original and not to the cassette copy or transfer. Nothing else has been done to the recording eq or editing wise apart from normalizing at -16db in Soundforge, and even the final song, which was cut in the original, has been left the way it was without any fades.

Still, the show is fabulous and there are some ripping cries from Hammill (check out The Birds!).

NEW: Peter Hammill live in Mexico City 2014 - 2CD - November 9

Peter Hammill & Gary Lucas - Teatro de la Ciudad, Mexico City, Mexico (November 9, 2014)

A quite challenging show for someone who didn't know quite a lot about Peter and Gary's careers (only a very little taste of both...); as it was a show of quite experimental nature, the venue was at half its capacity, so 15 minutes before the start we were taken from the cheapest area to the nearest one! The stuff they played was sort of an enigma for me, but will definitely listen to the show again. They played (I guess...) only songs from their collaborational album, Other World. The tracks I could guess (after a quick listen of album samples) are:

01 Intro
02 Spinning coins
03 Some Kind of Fracas
04 Of Keith and Kin
05
06 This is showbiz
07 Cash
08 Built From Scratch

Peter Hammill solo - voice, Yamaha grand piano, acoustic guitar

Audio quality Very Good

Hammill's was in very good vocal form, both with fresh, very powerful vocals as deep bass - bariton/tenor and with an high controlled falsetto, full of harmonics; the show is intense, theatrical, dramatic and lyrical, with very few instrumental errors, at piano as at guitar, particularly in the first section and Hammill has a great facility with the highest notes of his voice, as ever used like an instrument full of colors and dimamics.
Curtains is one of the best versions of his whole career, if not the best and the same thing I can say for The Mercy, great versions too of Comfortable, The Birds (with a clothing section never so intense), Amnesiac (as a thunder), Stumbled, an intense Friday Afternoon.
If I did not seen the tracklist and the date, I would have thought this was a show of Hammill's best vocal period - '86/'90 or 1997/2004 -
A very interesting document for new and old fans.
Higly Recommended

As the location is only 3 miles away from my home, I went to this show after I have been thrilled by the re-union show I went to in Amsterdam a few months earlier. As I knew that this day of the Leverkusener Jazzfestival was presented by "Rockpalast", I expected that the show would be recorded for a later broadcast.

I think I don't have to spend much time on the music. This show is a perfect concert (both musically and technical in the sense of picture and sound quality) of the 2005 VDGG reunion line-up. This is a must have not only if you're a VDGG fan. There was the speak of releasing this show officially a while ago, but it seems that these plans are cancelled.

An edited version of this concert (about 59 minutes) was broadcast on WDR, 16. January 2006. It had 6 tracks, plus 2 portions of an interview with Peter Hammill. You'll find this version on Disc 2.

Finally, on 19. August 2007, the complete show was broadcasted on WDR. In the meantime there's a 'WDR Test A' station on Astra 19.2E, which carries exactly the WDR program, but has a Dolby Digital audio track in 448 kbps and most of the time a much much higher bitrate. The result is a perfect picture and a bitrate over 7 mbps. So without doubt, this DVD provides the best SD quality of this show that you can find.

I included the mpeg stereo audio stream as well (you can choose audio in the menu), there's also a second mpeg audio stream included (not reachable through menu), while I don't know how and if it differs to the other ones - there was space for it left on the DVD anyway ;-).

The first aired edited version of the concert is included in this torrent (on Disc 2) mainly for the interview portions. But also -because of the high bitrate of the complete broadcast- I had to split the complete show onto two DVDs and there was place for the edited broadcast on Disc 2. You see that I'm kind of a completist ;-).

NEW: Van Der Graaf Generator & Peter Hammill "Pilgrimage" - 16CD - live 1970 - 1986

VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR & PETER HAMMILL
PILGRIMAGE
1970-1986

Back in 1988 the Pawn Hearts Society put together two sets of tapes -
"Fragments Out Of Time" and "In Still Life". Between them there are live
recordings of over 130 songs, at least one version of almost every song that
Hammill or Van der Graaf Generator ever played live between 1970 and 1986. In
total, there were twelve tapes, roughly 18 hours of music. Only one song was
duplicated on the eight Fragments tapes; In Still Life had alternate versions
together with a few songs that were missed off Fragments due to lack of space.
(A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers was deliberatly left off the tapes as the only
version that exists is the well known TV performance.)

The performances are arranged chronologically, as much as possible by grouping
of period of performance. Songs that were rarely performed tend to show up in
the period in which they first appeared on vinyl. As you would expect the sound
quality varies, I would grade most of the tracks as B/B+ with some slightly
better, and some - mainly the early Hammill solo performances - generally not
quite as good: their main deficiency being some slight tape hiss.

I received a cd-r copy of these tapes (#95/100) a few years ago. I have removed
tracks that have been officially released on The Box and Margin+ and slightly
re-ordered the running order to maintain the period chronology once the tracks
were on 80 minute discs instead of 90 minute tapes. Where space permitted I've
added additional tracks from the appropriate period. Some of these are
alternative versions but others are ones that were simply not included on the
original tapes: these were identified in a review in the Pilgrims fanzine -
having read the article I went out of my way to trade for copies of the shows
where the missing songs were performed. I have not replaced any tracks with
newer versions of the same show (e.g., the Basel 72 tracks are the ones I
originally received rather than the calayx1 remaster).

There were some speed problems on the discs when I received them, which I
attempted to correct through a combination of listening and comparing the
running times listed on the tape artwork, although the latter couldn't always
be relied upon. The first 12 volumes were torrented on STG in late 2003/early
2004 by someone who received an audio copy of the discs from me. This flushed
out a few more speed problems which I have - hopefully -fixed.  For this version
I have made a few more corrections, using other versions of songs as a
comparison.

In all there will be sixteen discs to this set - the first ten cover the
Fragments tapes and the remaining six In Still Life

Artwork, including the original tape inserts, is included. The
tape artwork includes comments as well as the original track listing.

**January 2010 re-seed. Tape inserts and CD covers are now included.
All files are untouched as above and as I received them, however, TLH reports
sector boundary error on track 13-04 (Boat Of A Milion Years) despite passing
md5 checksum. For this reason I have left the file as is.**

Thanks go to all the tapers over the years, the pawn hearts society, the original
seeder and anyone else involved in producing or upgrading this set.

NEW: Van Der Graaf Generator live in Darmstadt 2013 - 2CD - June 20

Van Der Graaf Generator 2013.06.20 Darmstadt, Centralstation [AUD]

Tonight's motto might have been "What if we play only long songs?" Well, almost. The 2 songs under 10 minutes were introduced as "a couple of hit singles" by a good-tempered Peter Hammill. On his last solo tour he looked rather tired (but still did the hell of a performance) after being stuck in a train in heavy weather. No tiredness this time - his voice was very strong, he was in a rocking mood, the audience freaked out. Did I mention they played "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers"?

I recorded from second row, center - so the instruments are a bit louder than the voice in the loud parts, but not too much. And I caught some of PHs off-microphone comments and his "yeeeaaaaaah!" (meurglys III, at 10:14). The recording turned out well, but a bit muffled, so here you have a mastered version.

Later that night, I got stuck in a train in heavy weather, but that's another story.

NEW: Van Der Graaf Generator live in Rimini 1975 - 2CD - August 9 - early show

Van der Graaf Generator
Rimini, L'Altro Mondo
9 August 1975 (early show = afternoon show)

audience recording

setlist:
101 - The Undercover Man
102 - Scorched Earth
103 - Man-Erg
104 - Lemmings
105 - La Rossa
201 - Arrow
202 - A Louse Is Not A Home
203 - Faint-Heart And The Sermon
204 - The Sleepwalkers

The story of this tape is quite interesting, as it comes from a whole batch of open reels all taped within a less
than 2 weeks long span at the same venue, L'Altro Mondo in Rimini, Italy, a kind of giant hangar, very innovative
at the time, where hundreds of people were stuffed dancing (and doing other things). Amongst the recordings there
were a few Italian artists (most prominently Banco del Mutuo Soccorso and Fabrizio De Andrè) and some foreigners
(Van der Graaf Generator, obviously, but also Suzi Quatro, Demis Roussous and more). That said, the two performances
Van der Graaf Generator put on that same day (afternoon and evening shows were common in those days) were astounding.
The band had reformed only a few months before but was in fantastic shape. Listening to the energy coming out of
that stage is indeed amazing even nowadays.
The setlist mixed a few "old" classics with the recently recorded material from Godbluff, but also added numbers
from Peter Hammill solo side of the discography.
Since the evening show = late show surfaced years ago as a bootleg double cd (Worldly Men And Strangers,
Reel Tapes Records), a copy of it ended up in Peter Hammill's own hands. Tracks from that show have since appeared
in a few official releases (The Box 4cd set and various remastered editions of VdGG albums).

I've seen a tracklist for this same show that was quite different: but I can guarantee this is the real deal, as it
is sourced directly from the original reels (as stated above).
Also, Rimini's tapes from this batch have often been defined as mixing desk sourced. They are not. The original taper
did set up his Revox close to the mixing desk but then, rather than plugging into the board itself, ran his microphone
wires all the way to the stage, bundled with the electricity wires for the lighting rig. From what he told me (a long
long time ago, I must say), I seem to remember they were actually fixed to the lighting rigs with gaffa tape.
And that's the reason for what has elsewhere being described as "PA hum": the damned noise present in all of these
recordings is not, unfortunately a simple hum, but keeps increasing (and decreasing) in volume and frequency, the more
(or less) the lights were turned on (or off) to illuminate the stage...
That's basically the reason why no amount of "automatic" denoising or equalizing will go anywhere near getting rid of
the nuisance.
Still, the dynamic of this recording - with quiet nearly solo passages which suddenly give space to loud and vibrant
band ensambles - is absolutely superb! For your own sake: listen to this as loud as you can...

As I saw a request for this I am happy to fulfill it in the hope that this minor flood of early
VDGG continues and yields to me some other unheard gems (An Epidemic Of Father Christmases, anyone?).

This is an very good recording. No major problems other than a certain distance and a fair amount
of chatter (blooming Italians, eh?) The sound is clear and undistorted with plenty of top end-you
can clearly hear the acoustic guitar and the cymbals-so I'd give it a B+.

NEW: Peter Hammill live in Stuttgart 1986 - 1DVD - November 30

PETER HAMMILL
Stuttgart (Germany), Maxim
30 November 1986

Peter Hammill : voice, guitar, keyboard

Audience-shot footage of Peter Hammill at the Maxim in Stuttgart, November 30th 1986. This is a video I got in a trade some years ago. Thanks go to the person who supplied it. Credit goes to the chap who filmed it too. This is a low generation copy, possibly second generation or so. Unfortunately, the camera appears to have had its settings for lightness wrongly adjusted and so for a quite a lot of the time, Peter appears as a blazing white glare of light. There's also a fair amount of camera-wobble. That having been said, it's a pretty decent gig and a good performance although some songs were cut from the footage, presumably due to limited available tape. Such a shame that 'The Lie' was one of them! Still, this is one of the very few bits of PH footage I've seen which features 'Time Heals' and 62 minutes of Hammill video is clearly better than none at all.

Running time 62 minutes.

Set List:
My Room (incomplete)
Vision
Too Many Of My Yesterdays
Other Old Clichés
Time Heals
The Comet, The Course, The Tail
Time For A Change

NEW: Peter Hammill live in Moscow 1998 - 2CD - April 17

Peter Hammill
Moscow - 1998-04-17

for this one I can supply the fine details. I remember trading his show with Konstatin Lounkov
directly. I was very impressed with the proffesional artwork and printing of the booklet and cd-labels
(nowadays everyone can do it at home, but then it was pure dedication).

Vapp.de reports that the Russians are talkative and enthusiastic, but i think it does not
spoil the recording in any way. Maybe it's even better compared to the akward quietness of the
admirers at recent gigs [myself included].
